Worldiff - App Design

The project aims to make foreigners better understand local cultures. I designed a social media-like app that enables users to browse and add posts about cultural differences.

Life is different in another country
There are some experiences from foreign people
I did't know there is a disposal under the sink for a month.
Why do random people smile at me?
I thought the flashing hand sign means that I can't cross the road.
In the US, there are

Problem

Goal

Foreigners who plan to live in the host country for a long time need help and guidance to understand the local culture.

Help new foreign residents (temporary or permanent) perceive subtle cultural differences and unwritten rules of the local society.

User Research

I did semi-structural interviews with 5 foreign residents from China, Ethiopia, India, and Taiwan to understand are differences between their home countries and the US, how they feel about the differences, and what kind of actions they take.

1. Some cultural differences are subtle that foreigners might not understand.

Therefore, foreigners need to understand implicit social rules and solve problems in daily life.

: Did you know the difference in the bus before you came to America?
I4: No. No idea.

2. Some foreigners donā€™t know why they canā€™t accommodate well.

They donā€™t know what the problems are, so I try to increase peoplesā€™ awareness of culture shock.

ā€œI just feel like Iā€™m kind of uncomfortable here. Thatā€™s how like Iā€™m not making friends as I expected. So, you know, itā€™s itā€™s itā€™s like back then, there wasnā€™t really like any type of, you know, trying to solve this problem because I donā€™t even know what was the problem.ā€ -I5

3. Foreigners seek help from native friends or foreign friends who stay in the host country longer when they have difficulties.

Thus, improving intercultural interaction is important.

ā€œI had a friend that lived here for a couple years, like she came about 2.3 years before I did. When I met up with her, I asked her that why do people just randomly say hi? or like this person say hi to meā€¦ā€ ā€“I1
So,
As newcomers, they need to know the culture to better adapt to the new environment. As ā€œadventuresā€, they want to explore more things about the host country.

Frustration

  • Assume himself has known some things throughly until he encounter difficulties
  • Cultural identity crisis

Design Ideation and Rationale

After have the understanding about the target users, Ā I brainstorm several ideas to solve the problem. For example, collecting peopleā€™s experiences for others to refer (cultural differences set) and building a map integrating the stores/venues where are international friendly with event information.
Here are some sketches of them.

I chose to use the Questions, Options, and Criteria (QOC) method to decide which idea I would move forward with. The question is from my problem statement, the options are from my brainstorming, and the criteria used to judge the options is need finding from user interviews.

1. Assess design solution (options) by the criteria established based on interviews.

2. After deciding the design solution as a cultural difference set, assess how to provide the content.

ā“ Let's have a platform to collect cultural differences!
šŸ’”Ā Ā Yes, and how should I manage cultural differences?
ā“ There are many resources online, so let's integrate information from different websites.
šŸ’”Ā Ā Yes, in this way I can gain rich content at one time, and then I have to think about which resources are valuable and reliable.
ā“ Maybe I can collect, digest, and sort out cultural differences from reliable resources such as books, papers, and websites for users.
šŸ’”Ā Ā Yes, and how about the following updates and maintenance? Does that mean I need a content writing person/team?
ā“ Or maybe I can let users provide the content and share with each other? So there will be continuous new and various content
šŸ’”Ā Yes, considering human resources that will be a good solution, and for the reliability issues, I can make users to validate it...
šŸ˜Ž Please see the key feature part for the final solution!
Spoiler: I add a binary rating (agree/disagree) in posts

Storyboard

So how the platform collecting cultural differences by users work?
This is the scenario of using the app, Worldiff. See how Worldiff works.

Features

Browse Posts

Yes, users want to learn more about cultural differences.
However, if I don't know where differences are, who can I learn?
Because some cultural differences are subtle that foreigners might not realize and understand, when users donā€™t know where to start, they can Ā browse and explore to discover more differences.

Country Filter

The filter enable users to find posts related to their hometown and interested countries.
Through this, you can learn from who has a similar background as yours.

Category Filter

There are main categories (e.g. food) and subcategories (e.g. dessert), which structure a better information hierarchy for users to explore cultures.
When foreigners have no ideas where to start to learn, the app provides lots of topics which supposed to be helpful to users.

Search Posts

If users want to know specific topic, they can search for keywords.

Other Features

Usability Testing & Iterations

Allow users to DM other users without adding a friend

I thought there could be a friends feature but found it a little redundant. Users want to know other users' experiences and maybe ask questions even when they are not "friends". It's like a quick matching and talks. Some users feel adding friends is somehow like a commitment but they just want to know more details in this case. Therefore, I decided to let users message others without adding friends first and leave the platform as a touch point for meeting new friends but not include all further friend interaction. Common scenarios are that people will exchange contact info and turn to social media if they want to connect more. And that's why I make the platform focusing on culture and doesn't cover too many social media functions.

The positions of the
searching bar/button

At first, I put the searching bar on the top of the homepage. After usability testing, I found that some users have difficulties finding the searching function when they switch to other pages, and they have to take extra steps to go back to the homepage then search. Therefore, I move the searching button to the fixed navigation bar.

The positions of the
like and bookmark buttons

The "like" and "bookmark" buttons are placed together at first. However, when I asked a participant to bookmark a post, he said that the two icons are a little confused since the heart icon can also represent "favorite" in some apps. Thus, I separate the like button from other buttons. After the change, the buttons on the left are for interacting with other users on the app (e.g. like, agree, disagree) while the buttons on the right are for personal use (e.g. bookmark, share to other social media, report abuse).

Conclusion

Motivation
Observe and experience foreign adaptation problems
The Initial Idea: How to solve the adaptation problem?
Define the problem
Conduct secondary research
Conduct interviews of foreign people
Redefine the Problem
Find that foreign people tend to not think ā€œdifficultiesā€as problems but new challenges and opportunities to explore more about the local culture.
Redefine the goal: help people better understand local cultures (rather than solve adaptation problems)
The previous problem statement was too broad and didā€™t fit usersā€™ need.
Redefine: How to help people better understand local cultures?
Ideate solutions
Brainstorm possible solutions
Use the user needs found in the interview as the criteria to choose a solution (co-editing cultural difference set app)
Ideate features
Create storyboard and use it to come up with related features. Draw a user flow as the structure of screens.
Across many solutions that might help people better understand local cultures, the co-editing cultural difference sets is the most suitable one. Users can share their thoughts and observation about cultures. People can found things not written in textbooks and unspoken rules in the society, and also feel relief when seeing other people encountering similar difficulties
Wireframe and prototype
Use Adobe XD to build prototypes from low Ā to high fidelity
Iterate
Usability tests: users can navigate through the app and find the information easily. Most concerns came from the positioning of the app. Is it repetitive to other usual social media?
Find the niche to redesign:
(1) Easy way to find culture-related content -> Country filter
(2) Find reliable content -> User ratings
(3) A touch point to meet new friends in different culture but donā€™t overlap interpersonal interaction features with other social media -> There is no friend feature but DM feature.
Further prototyping and iterating
Gathering user feedback, I strengthened the country comparison feature and modified the message feature to make people find certain information easier during iterations.
